How The Family Leadership
Experience Started
My father was a force to be reckoned with—strong, confident, and always putting his family first. We affectionately called him a “Tonka Truck” because he was Tonka Tough! Despite facing numerous health challenges, he always bounced back – strong and resilient!
One day, while he was undergoing a procedure, my oldest sister Kim and I were sitting in the waiting room. We’ve always bounced ideas off of each other and this day she helped me put into words an idea that I had. I had just taken an assessment at work, and it made a huge impact on how I communicated with my family. I wanted to take the things I had learned at work about what it took to build strong teams and bring that to families. After all, families are the most important teams of all! As Desmond Tutu beautifully said, “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”
That was over a decade ago, and I still have the outline we created and printed out on that day. The outline for The Family Leadership Experience! Over, the past ten years, I’ve continued researching and gathering insights on what makes families truly thrive. What I’ve learned is that thriving families share a strong foundation in finance, communication, and well-being.
After leaving my corporate career last year, I took some time to disconnect and reflect. Then, I met with a few trusted friends who would give me honest feedback. It was then that I decided it was finally time to bring the Family Leadership Experience to life. It’s still amazing to me how relevant that original outline is today, and I’m excited to share everything I’ve learned with as many families as possible!
